Whether you’re a woman who doesn’t leave the house without completely beating your face, or one who prefers the natural look, it’s hard to deny the effect an application of mascara and eyeliner can have on tired, worn-out looking eyes. Even if you’re going for a simple look, applying a little eye makeup is a great way to make your eyes appear bigger and brighter. Here are a few tips for putting the spotlight on your eyes.

Curl your lashes. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rocking your own lashes or going for a glammed-up look with a pair of falsies, curling your lashes makes them appear longer, and also makes your eyes look more wide-awake. When using an eyelash curler, start at the root of your lashes to get a perfect curl, instead of a crimp. Although it may be tempting to buy any ‘ol eyelash curler from the 99 cent store, it’s better to invest in a quality eyelash curler that has extra padding to protect your eyes and hair follicles.

Groom your eyebrows. Try filling in your brows with a pencil, or brushing and shaping them with clear brow mascara to make your eyelids look larger. If you’re going to tweeze your brows to emphasize your arch, avoid over-plucking them. Highlighting your entire brow bone with a matte pencil will also open your eye area.

Choose the right pencil. Add contrast to your eyes and eye color by applying a dark liner along the upper and lower lash line. Black, brown, dark navy, and charcoal are all great choices. Further accentuate your eyes by applying a white or light-colored eyeliner along the inner corner of your eyes only.

Make your lashes pop. Start applying mascara from root to ends using just the tip of the wand. Use right-to-left strokes in an upward direction to get the best coverage. Don’t be afraid to add more than one coat for thicker lashes. If you’re wearing false lashes, mascara will also help blend your natural and fake lashes together more effectively.
