While it may seem to only exist in the time of cavemen, there was a time when people were not so reliant on sugar. But now that sugar, especially refined sugar, has reached industrialized levels of making it available in every home and almost every meal, people are going to have to check their sugar habits before it is too late. That’s right, that sweet tooth can be deadly.


Understanding the Side Effects
The problem with refined sugar is that it has been too blindly accepted into people’s meals not only as something to sprinkle on top but as an additive as well. Sugar provides empty calories which leaves men and women with hungry cells. It can be especially detrimental in women and children leading to health problems such as diabetes. Do research about what you and your family are eating. Just because it’s been around for “ages” and has undergone FDA testing doesn’t mean it is still safe to eat.
More and more studies are showing that people would do better to move away from using sugar since it does not provide the body with a positive side effect, instead limiting the body to sugar crashes, insulin rashes, headaches, migraines, and more. That’s plenty of reasons to quit sugar in your life.

Types of Sugar Substitutes
Not all sugar substitutes are created equal. Some have been on the market longer while others are still very questionable about what long term effects they wrought.
A few common types of sugar substitutes that come in packet form or have even been added to prepared meals such as brownie mixes, cake mixes, and ice cream include:
● Equal
● Sweet and Low
● Splenda
● Saccharin
All of the above, especially Splenda, raised red flags for doctors reviewing their patients’ diets. Splenda is especially an eyebrow raiser because of its empty calories and negative side effects on lab rats.

Natural Sugar Substitutes
When people want something a little sweet they would get further by applying a topical application of sugar sweetness to their food. Here are a few suggestions of things that can be added in moderation to help people wean themselves of the sugary good stuff:
● Honey
● Maple Syrup
● Molasses

Warning Label Red Flags
A person wanting to compare and contrast sugar vs no sugar can just look at the nutritional facts on the side of the cereal box, candy bar, or any other food. When the below are listed near the top of ingredients it would be best to steer clear of those products:
● Corn Syrup
● High Fructose Corn Syrup
● Sugar
● Aspartame

Once you’ve learned the negative effects of sugar substitutes you can start living a healthier lifestyle by cutting out sugary treats one day at a time. Be strong. Live healthier.
